GETTING THE RIGHT RING SIZE

Thinking of buying your wedding ring online but worried about getting the correct size?

It might be more important than you think, as not all wedding rings can be changed after you’ve bought them.

WHY CAN’T MY RING BE RE-SIZED?

The wedding ring sector has exploded with new metals and materials becoming increasingly popular.  But unlike traditional Gold and Platinum rings, many alternative materials cannot be re-sized, so you might have to buy another ring!

NO WORRIES – I’LL BUY ONE OF THOSE SIZING KITS FROM AMAZON!

Nowadays home sizing kits are widely available online and customers are more confident to measure their own finger size, at home.

However, it is not as simple as it first appears.  We decided to test these sizing kits ourselves and here is what we noticed.

Plastic Belt Sizer

When we tried this little gadget, we noticed that while we were happy with the size once on, the belt moved too easily up the gauge as we squeezed it over the knuckle.

The plastic belt flexes as you put it on and take it off.  However, 99.9% of wedding rings do not bend!

Also, it was in our nature to pull the belt as tight as possible- as that felt like the right thing to do.  Which of course, would give us a false reading and a ring that would be too small.

Although this can help you ascertain a base size to work from, we would never recommend this as an accurate way to order your ring.

Sizing Gauges

We bought a ring gauge from an online seller with great reviews so that we could compare it to our trade sizers.

Although the sizers were pretty good in the smaller sizes, we did find that the large sizes started to become increasingly inaccurate.

By size Z, you could be a whole size out!

BUT I WANT TO BUY A WIDE BAND!

The width of all the online kits we came across measured around 2mm in width.  This is great if you are buying a 2mm wide ring.  But size varies according to the width of the ring you want to purchase.

An 8mm wide band will measure differently to a 2mm wide band because it displaces more flesh.

Changing the width from 2mm to 8mm can result in a size increase, by up to one whole size.

If you order an 8mm ring in size Z using these sizers, you could be up to 2 sizes out.

NO WORRIES – I’LL GET MEASURED IN MY LOCAL JEWELLERS

Like the clothing industry, different jewellers may measure slightly differently too!

Centre or Leading Edge?

Say what??  Let us explain…

A jeweller can measure either to the centre of a ring or to its leading edge.  Again, this will change your size, especially with larger-width rings.

With an 8mm wide ring, the difference can be ¾ size.

So, if you walk into a High Street Jewellers, you may not know which method they use (to be honest, they might not know either!)

Plus think of it from their point of view – there’s little incentive to be accurate if they suspect you are going to buy online and not from their store.

LANCE JAMES COMPLIMENTARY RING SIZING KIT

At Lance James, we realise how important it is to get the correct size before we go to production, so that is why we offer a sizing service with all our made-to-measure online orders!

Our FREE service means we will send you a kit of 5 sample rings centred around the size you provide us.  The samples supplied will also be close to the width of your ring design.

We recommend that you place the rings on one by one and the ring that fits snuggly (has a bit of resistance) over the knuckle and has a slight spin when sitting at the bottom of the finger, should be the correct one for you.  We also recommend that you wear the samples at home all day, as your fingers can vary over 24 hours.  Once you are confident with the size, just fill out the form and return the kit to us.  If none of them fit (yes, it does happen!!), we will be happy to send you a second kit for the price of the postage.
