Zirconium by Lance James

Zirconium is the 40th element in the periodic table and thus a pure metal.  Often used in dentistry, zirconium is non-toxic and is a perfect choice for those with allergies or sensitive skin. It is found naturally in minerals such as zircon.

Found in South Africa and Australia, the natural metal is silver-gray.  To achieve the lustrous black finish, zirconium is heated for several hours to create a hard, black, coating of zirconium oxide. The metal can be hand finished to polish, matt or textured surfaces.

No metal is totally scratch-resistant, but zirconium is very durable and has a strong resistance to corrosion.  The black layer is equally hardwearing and doesn’t fade or change colour.
